What Makes Our Repair Service Different

At Johantgen Jewelers, we take a straightforward approach to jewelry repair: your piece stays in our shop, gets worked on by skilled craftspeople, and comes back to you properly fixed.

Your Jewelry Stays With Us

When you bring in a piece for repair, our jewelers examine it, discuss options with you, and do the work in our own shop. This means better communication, faster turnaround, and real accountability for the finished result.

We Explain Everything

Before any work begins, we tell you exactly what your piece needs in plain language. If there are different approaches with different costs, we explain the tradeoffs. You make informed decisions because we give you real information.

Quality Work That Lasts

We repair jewelry to keep it repaired. That means proper techniques, quality materials, and attention to detail. A prong rebuild done right lasts years. A chain soldered correctly stays strong. We’ve built our reputation over 130 years by doing repairs the right way.

Honest Assessments

If your ring just needs cleaning, we’ll tell you that. If there is significant wear and tear on your piece that compromises its ongoing durability, we tell you about that too. If a repair isn’t worth the cost, we say so. You deserve honest guidance, and that’s exactly what you’ll get.

Repairs We Handle Every Day

Whatever happened to your jewelry, we’ve probably seen it before and fixed it many times:

  1. Ring Resizing

Too tight after years of wear? Too loose after weight loss? Inherited a ring that doesn’t fit? We resize rings to fit comfortably, whether that means making them larger or smaller. We consider the ring’s design, metal type, and any stones when determining the best approach. Some rings resize easily. Others require more careful work. We’ll tell you what’s involved and make sure the finished ring fits perfectly.

  1. Prong Repair and Retipping

Prongs wear down over time. They catch on sweaters. They bend. They thin out until they’re barely holding your stone. Worn prongs are the number one cause of lost stones, and it’s completely preventable. We rebuild prongs properly, restoring them to full strength so your diamonds and gemstones stay secure. If you’ve been meaning to get your prongs checked, this is your sign.

  1. Stone Replacement

Lost a diamond from your ring? Missing a stone from your grandmother’s bracelet? We source replacement stones that match your existing pieces, whether that’s diamonds, colored gemstones, or specialty stones. We set them securely. For sentimental pieces, we take extra care to find stones that honor the original look.

  1. Chain and Necklace Repair

Broken chains, damaged clasps, stretched links, kinks that won’t come out. We repair all types of chains and necklaces, from delicate gold strands to heavy statement pieces. A proper solder joint is invisible and stronger than the original.

  1. Clasp Replacement

That bracelet you stopped wearing because the clasp won’t stay closed? The necklace that falls off at the worst moments? We replace worn, broken, or frustrating clasps with quality hardware that actually works. Sometimes upgrading to a better clasp style makes a piece you’d stopped wearing suddenly practical again.

  1. Ring Shank Repair and Replacement

The bottom of your ring, the shank, takes the most abuse. It thins over years of wear, eventually becoming too weak or even cracking. We can reinforce thinning shanks or replace them entirely, preserving the top of your ring while giving it a solid new foundation. This is common work for rings that have been worn and loved for decades.

  1. Jewelry Cleaning and Polishing

Sometimes jewelry just needs professional attention to look like itself again. We clean and polish pieces to remove years of buildup, scratches, and dullness. You’ll be amazed at how different your jewelry looks after proper cleaning. This is also when we can spot issues like loose stones or worn prongs before they become bigger problems.

  1. Full Restoration

Some pieces need more than a single repair. They need comprehensive restoration, addressing multiple issues to bring them back to their original condition. We evaluate the entire piece, create a restoration plan, and execute it with attention to preserving the original character while ensuring structural integrity. Family heirlooms often fall into this category.

  1. Pearl Restringing

Pearls should be restrung periodically to prevent strand failure. We restring pearl necklaces and bracelets with proper knotting between each pearl, so if the strand ever does break, you lose one pearl instead of watching them scatter across the floor. If your pearls haven’t been restrung in years, it’s time.

  1. Watch Battery Replacement and Basic Watch Repair

Dead watch battery? Broken band? Clasp issues? We handle basic watch repairs and battery replacements while you wait or with quick turnaround. For more complex watch repairs involving movements, we can discuss options and timelines.

How We Handle Your Jewelry Repairs

Step 1: You Tell Us What Happened

Bring in your piece and tell us the story. When did it break? What’s been bothering you about it? Your input helps us understand what the piece needs.

Step 2: We Examine It Carefully

Our jewelers inspect your piece thoroughly under magnification. We look for the obvious problem, but we also check for other issues you might not have noticed: loose stones, worn prongs, thin spots, and compromised joints. We want to catch everything now to prevent more problems in the future.

Step 3: We Explain What We Found

We tell you exactly what your piece needs, in plain language you can understand. If there are multiple issues, we prioritize them. If there are different approaches, we explain the options.

Step 4: You Get a Clear Quote

Before any work begins, you receive a clear estimate. If we discover something unexpected during the repair, we stop and discuss it with you first.

Step 5: The Repair Happens Right Here

Your jewelry stays in our shop, worked on by our jewelers. This means better quality control, faster turnaround, and real accountability.

Step 6: We Check Our Work

Before you pick up your piece, we inspect the completed repair. We don’t hand back jewelry until we’re satisfied with the work.

Step 7: You Leave With a Piece That Works

When you pick up your jewelry, we show you what was done and answer any questions about care or maintenance. Your piece is ready to wear and enjoy.

Why Minneapolis Families Bring Their Jewelry Repairs to Johantgen

We Actually Do the Work Ourselves

We have a real workshop with skilled jewelers who’ve spent years developing their craft. When you hand us your jewelry, it stays with us. The people you talk to are connected to the people doing the work.

Family-Owned for Over 130 Years

As a reliable family-owned and operated business, repairs aren’t just transactions to us. We’ve fixed jewelry for grandparents, then their children, then their grandchildren. We see the same families for decades. That only happens when you do good work and treat people right.

Honest About What You Need

We don’t recommend unnecessary repairs. If your ring just needs cleaning, we’ll tell you that. If a repair isn’t worth the cost, we say so. Trust is built on honesty.

Faster Turnaround

When your jewelry is repaired in-house, repairs happen faster. Simple work can often be done in a few days to a week. Even complex repairs move quickly because there’s no waiting or delays.

Quality Work That Lasts

We repair jewelry to keep it repaired. Proper techniques, quality materials, and attention to detail. That’s how we’ve stayed in business for over a century.

We Care About the Stories Behind Your Pieces

That ring isn’t just metal and stone. It might be the ring your husband proposed with, your grandmother’s wedding band, or the necklace you bought on your honeymoon. We understand that jewelry carries meaning, and we treat your pieces with the respect those stories deserve.

Questions? We’ve Got Answers

How long do repairs typically take?

It depends on the repair. Simple work can often be done in a few days to a week. More complex repairs or full restorations might take one to two weeks. We’ll give you a realistic timeline when you drop off your piece. If you have a deadline, tell us upfront, and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

How much do jewelry repairs cost?

Every repair is different, so we quote individually after examining your piece. Bring it in for a free assessment.

Can you repair jewelry bought somewhere else?

Absolutely. We repair all jewelry regardless of where it was purchased. If it’s jewelry, we can evaluate it and give you an honest assessment.

Is it worth repairing, or should I just replace it?

Sometimes repair makes sense. Sometimes it doesn’t. We’ll give you an honest opinion based on the piece’s condition, the repair costs, and what the piece means to you. A sentimental family ring is almost always worth repairing. We help you make a decision that makes sense for your situation.

What if my stone fell out and I lost it?

We can source replacement stones that match your existing jewelry. We set the replacement securely and also check the other stones to prevent future losses.

Should I get my jewelry inspected even if nothing seems wrong?

Yes, especially for pieces with stones. Prongs wear gradually, and you might not notice until a stone is loose or gone. We recommend annual inspections for rings you wear daily. Catching a worn prong early is much less expensive than replacing a lost diamond.

Can you fix jewelry that another shop couldn’t repair?

Often, yes. We’ve successfully repaired pieces that seemed beyond help. Bring it in, and we’ll give you our honest assessment.

Do you work on antique or vintage jewelry?

We do, and we enjoy it. Antique pieces require special care to preserve their character while restoring function. We understand historical construction techniques and take a conservative approach that maintains the piece’s integrity.
