Understanding Vintage Watch Repair
A vintage watch runs on the same principles it did the day it was made, but decades of dried oil, worn pivots, and dust eventually catch up with it. Servicing one well means knowing how it was built, handling parts that may be 50 or 100 years old, and recognizing when to restore something and when to leave it as it is.
Many of the watches we see are family pieces. A grandfather’s pocket watch, a mid-century chronograph, a dress watch passed down at a graduation. Our goal is to return yours to reliable working order while keeping the look and history that make it yours.

Our Vintage Watch Services
Vintage Wristwatch Servicing
A full service on a vintage mechanical or automatic watch includes disassembly, cleaning, fresh lubrication, and careful adjustment of the movement. We then check timing and every function, so your watch keeps dependable time with regular wear.
Pocket Watch Repair and Restoration
Our watchmakers have extensive experience with both Swiss and American pocket watches, from everyday carry pieces to fine heirloom movements. Whether yours needs a thorough cleaning or more involved repair work, we aim to return it to the best condition possible.
Sourcing Hard-to-Find Parts
Older watches often need components that haven’t been manufactured in decades. We keep an extensive parts inventory and work with suppliers of original and vintage parts, so a watch you were told couldn’t be fixed may still have options.
Crystals, Crowns, and Case Care
Replacement crystals, crowns, stems, and gaskets are matched to your watch’s original specifications as closely as possible. Case cleaning and refinishing are handled conservatively, since heavy polishing can soften the sharp edges collectors value.
Pre-Owned and Vintage Timepieces
Our showroom also carries a selection of pre-owned watches, including pre-owned Rolex models. Each one is serviced before it’s offered for sale, so it’s ready to wear from the day you take it home.

How We Restore a Vintage Watch
Step 1 – Conversation and Watch History
We start by listening to what the watch is doing and what you know about its past. We also ask what matters most to you, whether that’s daily reliability or keeping the piece as original as possible.
Step 2 – Careful Examination
Our watchmaker inspects the movement, dial, hands, case, and crystal to understand the watch’s true condition. We note any worn or missing parts, along with anything that could affect originality.
Step 3 – Honest Recommendations and a Clear Quote
You’ll hear what the watch needs now, what can wait, and which options preserve its original character. Before any work begins, you receive a clear quote to approve.
Step 4 – Parts Sourcing
When parts are needed, we look first for original or period-correct components through our inventory and supplier network. If a part will add time or cost, we let you know before moving ahead.
Step 5 – Service and Restoration
The movement is disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled with the care an older watch requires. If we find an unexpected issue along the way, we pause and call you before going further.
Step 6 – Timing Check and Care Guidance
Before your watch goes home, we verify its timekeeping and test every function. We’ll also explain how to wind, wear, and store it so it stays healthy for years to come.

Why Twin Cities Watch Owners Trust Johantgen With Vintage Pieces
An old watch carries more than a movement. It usually carries a story, and we treat it that way from the moment you hand it to us.
A Real Respect for Originality
Original dials, hands, and case finishes play a big part in a vintage watch’s character and value. We walk through preservation and restoration choices with you before replacing or refinishing anything.
Watchmakers Who Enjoy the Challenge
Our watchmakers genuinely like working on older movements, including the ones that have been sitting still for decades. That patience is often what gets a stubborn watch running again.
Transparent From Start to Finish
You’ll know what your watch needs and what it will cost before any work begins. If anything changes during service, we call you and explain it in plain language.
130 Years of Caring for Family Heirlooms
Johantgen Jewelers has been family-owned and operated since 1896, with five generations helping customers care for the pieces that matter most to them. Families come back to us across generations, often for the heirlooms they inherited from the people who shopped here before them.
Here for the Next Service, Too
Mechanical watches need regular care, and we’re happy to stay on as your watch’s long-term caretaker. Questions that come up months later, a quick timing adjustment, or advice on when to schedule the next service are always welcome.

What Our Customers Say
“Great jewelry store, excellent repair work. Not terribly expensive. The best”
-Joyce Lee ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“My grandmother only shopped at their store when their original store was near her home. Whenever I need a repair or a piece of jewelry I shop at this store. I trust their workmanship and their service is great and up front. I will be bringing in my charm bracelet to get some charms removed, and some new ones added for my grand niece and possibly buying another bracelet for my other grand niece.”
-K Kilpatrick ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I brought in a mid-century Philippe Watch chronograph that had been sitting for decades, and Todd the watchmaker not only confirmed it was powered by a Valjoux movement, but brought it fully back to life. This was not a simple job, it needed a full teardown, new mainspring, and internal restoration, and the work was done with real craftsmanship and care.
Todd is clearly passionate (borderline obsessive in the best way), and it shows in the final result. The watch is now running beautifully, and I couldn’t be happier. The communication was always professional, and the pricing was fair for the level of work involved.
If you’ve got a vintage or heirloom watch, Johantgen is one of the few places left that can truly handle it. Highly recommended, 5 stars.”
-Dan Monaghan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“What a great friendly place! Tod the owner helped me replace a few batteries in my watches and took a couple links off one so it fit better. Quick service and a friendly conversation to go with it. I highly recommend this establishment!”
-Austen Hafner ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Came to Johantgen Jewelers for an appraisal for insurance and to get my wedding set soldered together. Nikki did an absolutely beautiful job with my rings, which were more challenging than typical rings due to the type of stones in them. She even tightened the settings to ensure I wouldn’t lose the stones. Todd was also great and worked with me to make sure I was covered with my appraisal, and he explained how to help make my ring more structurally stable. I’ll definitely be back for repairs and anything else I might need in the future!”
-Jess Kooiman ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a vintage watch?
There’s no strict cutoff, but most collectors call a watch vintage once it’s roughly 20 to 30 years old and antique once it reaches about 100. We work across that full range, from mid-century wristwatches to antique pocket watches.
Can you repair a watch I was told couldn’t be fixed?
Often, yes. Parts availability is the most common obstacle, and between our parts inventory and supplier connections, we can find a path forward for many watches thought to be beyond repair. We’ll give you an honest answer once we’ve examined it.
Will servicing affect my watch’s collector value?
Proper movement service generally protects a watch’s value. Replacing an original dial or hands, or heavily polishing the case, can lower collector value, so we discuss those decisions with you before doing any of that work.
Should I wind an old watch that hasn’t run in years?
We’d suggest having it examined first. Old lubricants dry out and turn sticky over time, and running a watch in that condition can wear its pivots and gears faster than normal.
How long does vintage watch service take?
It depends on the watch and whether parts need to be sourced. A routine cleaning moves faster than a restoration that calls for hard-to-find components, and we’ll give you a realistic timeframe after our assessment.
How much does vintage watch repair cost?
Cost depends on the movement, its condition, and the parts involved. We provide a specific quote after examining your watch, and no work begins until you approve it.
